National Cyber Security Awareness Month
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, which is the perfect time of year for individuals, businesses, and other organizations to reflect on the universe of cyber threats and to do their part to protect their networks, their devices, and their data from those threats.
Recognizing the importance of cybersecurity awareness, President Obama designated October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). Created as a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its public and private partners, including the National Cyber Security Alliance, the goal of NCSAM is to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and individual cyber hygiene.
As UCLA recognizes NCSAM, we believe it is the perfect time of year for our community to reflect on the universe of cyber threats and to do their part to protect their networks, their devices, and their data from those threats.
We lead Internet-connected, digital lives. From our desks and homes to on the go, we work, learn and play online. Even when we are not directly connected to the Internet, our critical infrastructure—the vast, worldwide connection of computers, data and websites supporting our everyday lives through financial transactions, transportation systems, healthcare records, emergency response systems, personal communications and more—impacts everyone.
No individual or entity has sole responsibility for securing the Internet. All of us have a role in securing our own part of cyberspace, including the devices and networks we use. Our individual actions have a collective impact and when we use the Internet safely, we make it more secure for everyone. If each of us does our part—implementing stronger security practices, raising community awareness, educating everyone -- young and old -- together we will become a digital society which is safer and more resistant and protected when attacks occur. The Internet is a shared resource and securing it takes the effort of everyone.
Please join us in our efforts to keep UCLA safe. Look for our posters across campus, safety and security tips on this website, and information about our upcoming events throughout the month. We invite you to participate and become actively involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Everyone can do something – it’s Our Shared Responsibility.
