FBI PSA: Employment Scam Targeting Students Remains Prevalent

College students across the country are becoming targets of an employment scam.

College students across the country are becoming targets of an employment scam. The phony “employer” instructs the student to purchase job-required software from a third-party vendor for which they reimburse the student with a check to deposit into their personal bank account. The check, however, is counterfeit, and the third-party vendor is fake, so the student experiences the financial loss.  The scam can result in a closure of the student’s account due to fraud, require that the student reimburse the bank for the counterfeit checks, adverse activity to the student’s credit record, etc.  For more information on the scam, visit the FBI website.
